MK Professional’s exclusive Tripole concept is the only technology that addresses the unique set of issues that arises when loudspeakers are placed to the sides or rear close to the monitoring position. A commercial cinema environment uses an array of direct radiating surrounds (monopoles) to create an enveloping, diffuse rear soundfield. But when placed close to the monitoring position in a typical studio space, conventional direct radiating loudspeakers become extremely directional, and therefore highly localizable, which can be distracting on soundtracks that require a non-specific, diffuse soundfield. Dipole loudspeakers are a widespread alternative, with drivers mounted only on the left and right sides of the cabinet in an attempt to mimic an array of surround speakers. But their highly diffuse soundfield will not produce the imaging specificity required for multi-channel music and for the occasional film effect intended to be reproduced with precise directionality. In addition, dipole surrounds tend to have a slightly different spectral character that does not match the front speakers. Exclusively designed and manufactured by MK Professional, the hybrid Tripole concept was envisioned as the perfect tool for multi-channel mixing and monitoring, incorporating both monopole and dipole elements into a single speaker enclosure. Each SS150 Tripole operates as two speakers at the same time: first a near-ideal point source direct radiator on the front baffle with MK Professional’s proprietary Phase-FocusedTM crossover feeding its 5 1/4” woofer and 1” soft-dome tweeter. The second is a dipole speaker using two unique side-mounted 3.25” polypropylene cone mid-tweeters with ferrofluid cooling. These drivers achieve a very smooth and transparent sound from 300 Hz through the critical midrange and beyond, due in part to the fact that they operate without any midrange crossover for optimum phase and sonic coherency. Voice-matched for MK Professional main speakers, the MK Professional SS150 Tripole gives the demanding audio professional the best of both worlds, combining a superb front-firing direct radiator with the wide, diffuse and enveloping sound of a dipole.
